Our Region

The Macedon Ranges wine region has over 40 boutique family operated wineries making small batch, high quality wines, less than an hour from Melbourne.

It may be the coolest wine region in mainland Australia, but you’ll receive a warm welcome in our cellar doors and you’re often likely to be served by the winemaker.

With vineyards at altitudes ranging from 300-800 metres, we’re categorized as a cool to cold climate—making it an ideal location for varietals like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sparkling. In the northern part of the region, you’ll find seductive cool climate Shiraz and Cabernet, and across much of the region, a number of aromatic whites, like Riesling and Gewürztraminer.

The region’s topography includes extinct volcanoes in the South and West, the granite boulders of the Cobaw Range in the North and the slate and gold-bearing gravels to the North West.
